1868: John W. Menard became the first Black to be elcted to congress

The Falling of the stars as stated by Jesus.
"Immediately after the distress of those days
" 'the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken." Matthew 24:29 |

During the month of November families from all over gather together and celebrate what and who they are thankful for. They express themselves and the gratitude that they feel.
The children of Isreal gathered together and were so thankful to have a place to come and worship their God. Ezra 3:11states that
"With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the LORD : "He is good;
his love to Israel endures forever." And all the people gave a great
shout of praise to the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the
LORD was laid."
Here at Patmos we have a foundation of love and gratefulness, let us remeber
that when we come to the house of the Lord to give Him all the praise and
Glory, for He is worthy.

As the Pastor Ponders
Is Alcohol Prohibited in the Bible?

Dear Family
It is my hope that your Christian Walk
(Race) with the Lord is valued as a precious experience in your life.
Understand that your Christian Walk (Race) with Jesus is just like a runner
engaged in ongoing training. For those competing in the sprints or short
distances the type of training is different because the race is shorter although
intense. However, the training for the highly respected marathon is
extremely intense and the longest of all races. It is this long race and
this intense training that best describes your Christian Walk (Race) with
Jesus. The Terrain is often extremely rigorous and the demands are
endless.
There are times when you enjoy the pace and there
are times when you simply feel so light headed that you can't see your
way. There are times when you are relaxed and there are times when you're
so tensed and fatigued that you don't know if you can go another step.
There are times when you want to laugh and there are times when you break out
in tears. There are moments when you are committed to completing the race;
and there are those times when you feel like quitting. The Spirit of God
is both our trainer and cheerleader. He is always there beside us every
step of the way to encourage us and He will not stop until we finished the
Christian Walk (Race).
Allow me to give you four practical tips to help you in your daily Christian Walk:
1.
You must take your daily training regiment seriously. You
must spend time with the Lord on a daily basis dedicated to prayer, meditation
and Bible study. It is not optional and it should not be taken
lightly. (1Cor. 9:24-27)
2.
You must set a pace that fits the race. You
must pace yourself and be prepared to stay in the Christian Walk (Race) for the
long haul. It is not a short sprint, but a long grueling, often brutal
life experience, like that of the marathon. If you approach it like a
sprint, you will run out of gas before you are anywhere close to the finish
line. Steadily allow the Spirit of God to build you up and give you
endurance. (Eccl. 9:11)
3.
You must stay focus on the goal. Do not allow yourself to become distracted by others around you or
the cares of life. They are there and they are real but they are
not the most important thing. You have to keep your eyes fixed on
the goal, finishing life's race and seeing Jesus. (Gal. 6:7-10; Phil. 3:12
-14)
4.
You must visualize crossing the finish line. You must constantly, see yourself in the winners' circle and on
the medal platform. Why? It's simple; He is preparing you to
be there. So you must envision yourself crossing the finish line
through the eyes of faith. (2Tim. 4:7; Heb. 12: 1-13)
Greetings in Christ,
Pastor Dade

| Is Alcohol Prohibited in the Bible? - Questions & Answers with Thaddues Jackson |
The Bible is clear on its stance in regard to alcohol. "Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent and stingeth like an adder." Proverbs 23:31, 32
Proverbs 20:1 says, "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise."
Perhaps the most famous text that people misinterpret to give themselves an excuse to drink is found in I Timothy 5:23 that says: "But use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine infirmities." Have you heard that before? It is a fact that doctors have prescribed some wine with other healing agents to assist the body with overcoming a specific illness or infirmity. In other words, under a doctor's care, wine can be used as medicine for some human ailments. That is ok. Wait a minute, before you stampede the corner liquor store for a bottle of Jack Daniels to relieve that headache or cough, consider this.
The Bible is its own expositor. It will never contradict itself. It will amplify, clarify and explain, but not contradict. So if the bible says that if you drink wine, then you are a fool, it can't turn around and encourage the elders to take a "swig" in the pastor's study on route to the pulpit just before the eleven o'clock service. Some have said it's ok to have a sip of alcohol every now and then, just be moderate and don't over do it. Have you heard that before? Well, the University of South Carolina has confirmed that every drop of alcohol consumed destroys a certain number of brain cells and damage to the brain is permanent. Answer this for me: Why would you put something in your mouth that is specifically designed to rob you of your good sense? That makes no sense at all! With all of the mixtures of truth and error and the unstable line that divides right from wrong according to worldly standards, you cannot afford to operate in this world without your complete mental faculties!
Ask righteous man Noah who got drunk and exposed his nakedness in his tent! You are deceived and a fool if you consume alcohol – period. (Thank God for forgiveness)
For some the confusion lies in the Greek word "oihos" which can mean fermented or unfermented wine based on the context used. The Bible condemns the use of fermented wine but the kind of wine that is good for a man to drink is in Isaiah 65:8. This text says:" Thus saith the Lord, as the new wine is found in the cluster, destroy it not for a blessing is in it." This refers to the fresh juice of the vine, unspoiled and unfermented – grape juice.
So is a little wine ok for you to drink? Yes. As long as it is unfermented grape juice, or under a doctor's order to alleviate a specifically prescribed illness. I'll drink to that!

| How History Became My Future- By Shauntelle Stevenson |
As a first time voter, this election was
a special one for me for several reasons, but primarily because of the
two main candidates for the democratic ticket, a woman and a Black man.
When I saw that Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama were the top two contenders
for the Democratic nomination for U.S. presidency, it was at that very
moment that I realized that history was being made and I had an opportunity
and a responsibility, to be a part of it.
From the very beginning, I knew who I would
be voting for. I knew that it was time for America and the world-at-large
to see Black people in a different light. It was time for everyone to see
that we as Black people can be more than amazing athletes or musicians.
We are lawyers, doctors, ministers, educators. We are more than single
parent homes, absentee fathers and sometimes absentee mothers, drug dealers,
and criminals. We are the products of two-parent homes that believe in
and support higher education. We are a people who learned long ago to stick
together and to do our best to give our children the brightest future imaginable.
We are an educated people who have learned to make the best out of sometimes
bad situations. More than anything, we are people that know and understand
that the key to success is hard work, determination, and faith.
This whole election process has defined and
confirmed the life long theory that you can "be anything you want
to be". I've heard it all my life and continue to hear it, even as
an adult. However, President-elect Barack Obama made that a reality for
me. He has shown little Black boys and girls, as well as older Black men
and women that the sky is the limit. He has made it clear that we can serve
our country at the highest level, not only in uniform. We can go to the
top schools in the country and graduate at the top of our class. We can
be the editor and president of one of the most prestigious law reviews
in this country, the Harvard law Review. We can practice a Christ-like
lifestyle and marry one woman or one man and raise our children in a two-parent
home and teach them by example to pattern their lives after Christ.
Most importantly, as a Christian, President-elect
Barack Obama's presidency confirms Philippians 4:12-13, which states 'Whatever
I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes
me who I am.' God's Word is being fulfilled and confirmed in this election
and through President-elect Barack Hussein Obama, and with the grace of
Our Lord and Savior, he will bring about the change that this country so
desperately needs. |

| Promse Land - By Cassandra Philogene |
|
Moses had a vision while Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream. Their apparition was one in the same, to see their people to freedom. Through the Red Sea the children of Isreal marched by their leader's side to the Promise Land. Onward was the march to Washington, hand in hand they walked on through the Land of Promise. Upon a Mountain Moses saw a land flowing with milk and honey, Cannan. While on a Mountain top Martin Luther King Jr. pictured freedom on the
red hills of Georgia.
With their souls laid to rest their staff of freedom waited for one of a
noble character to pick it up and continue the journey. Joshua continued
Moses' vision while Obama forfilled Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream, by
people judging one on their character rather than the color of their skin.
Around the city of Jerico they held in their pain and frustrations while silently waiting for God's delieverence. After wandering in the desert like nomads in foriegn lands, the Isrealites where readdy for the fulfillment of God's Promise Land that they would call home. When the walls came down a shout was heard that none could compare, until one came up that caused the wandering children of Africa to finally realize that they too have arrived to the Promise Land, their home America. |
