Epistles From the Editor

Dear Readers of PCN,

We hear multiple stories everyday. Some of them make us cringe others have us laughing, and some just leave us in shock and confusion. On October 20th of this year, a man went in to rob a type of check cashing store. The clerk was young woman who began crying and praying at the same time. Apparently the man that was robbing her told her he was not going to hurt her and spent about 10 minutes on his knees praying with her. After the prayer he took some cash and her cell phone.
Now when I hear that story I am shocked and confused. He came with the intention to steal from the establishment, got intercepted with prayer, and then continued rob the place.
How many of us are intent on doing something for whatever reason, we receive a Spiritual interception, but instead of turning away we continue on with our plans?
My prayer for you dear Reader, is that in this issue of Patmos Chapel's Newsletter, you will find that Spiritual interception that you will need and you will heed the voice of the Spirit and turn from whatever He is asking you to.

Sincerely Your Sister in Christ,

A PASTOR'S HEART
By - Deanna Malawy
A pastor’s heart is protective
and guards his flock from Satan’s snares.
A pastor’s heart is attentive
and seeks to know his people’s cares.
A pastor’s heart is sacrificial
and for his sheep will give its all.
A pastor’s heart is tender
and listens to the Spirit’s call.
A pastor’s heart is obedient
and heeds the Master’s commands.
A pastor’s heart is reflective
and considers he is but a man.

Breast Cancer Myths

Don't let yourself be a victim of misinformation and the myths generated by fear.

BREAST CANCER MYTHS

The Myth
*Finding a lump in your breast means you have breast cancer.

The Truth
*If you discover a persistent lump in your breast or any changes in breast tissue, it is very important that you see a physician immediately. However, 8 out of 10 breast lumps are benign, or not cancerous. Sometimes women stay away from medical care because they fear what they might find. Take charge of your health by performing routine breast self-exams, establishing ongoing communication with your doctor, and scheduling regular mammograms.

The Myth
*Men do not get breast cancer.

The Truth
*Quite the contrary. Each year it is estimated that approximately 1,700 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 450 will die. While this percentage is still small, men should also give themselves regular breast self-exams and note any changes to their physicians.

The Myth
*A mammogram can cause breast cancer to spread.

The Truth
*A mammogram, or X-ray of the breast, is one of the best tools available for the early detection of breast cancer. It CANNOT cause cancer to spread, nor can the pressure put on the breast from the mammogram. Do not let tales of other people's experiences keep you from having a mammogram. Base your decision on your physician's recommendation and be sure to discuss any questions or concerns with your doctor.

The Myth
*Having a family history of breast cancer means you will get it.

The Truth
*While women who have a family history of breast cancer are in a higher risk group, most women who have breast cancer have no family history. If you have a mother, daughter, sister, or grandmother who had breast cancer, you should have a mammogram five years before the age of their diagnosis, or starting at age 35.

The Myth
*Breast cancer is contagious.

The Truth
*You cannot catch breast cancer or transfer it to someone else's body. Breast cancer is the result of uncontrolled cell growth in your own body. However, you can protect yourself by being aware of the risk factors and following an early detection plan.

The Myth
*Knowing you have changes in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene can help you prevent breast cancer.

The Truth
*While alterations in these genes in men and women can predispose an individual to an increased risk of breast cancer, only 5% to 10% of patients actually have this mutation. This is not an absolute correlation. Like your age or having a family history of breast cancer, it's a factor you just can't control. But you can let your physician know, perform regular breast self-exams, and focus on the fact your chances of not having this disease are greater than 90%.

October is here...
This month I met a young woman of 22 years. She seemed fine, she was holding her newborn baby in her arms and conversing with some people. I approached her and we began to talk. She seemed fine, I wanted to know why she was here. "I have breast cancer." I was not ready for the words that came out of her mouth. She was only 22! Breast cancer is not age discriminatory, it does have a favored gender, yet it attacks both. In the month of October, please spread the information about breast cancer awareness. Testimony and Praise

Giving God the Praise for only He is worthy.
I had been served with the papers, the Sheriff's Office had been notified to help with my extraction.
I was to pack up my belongings and leave my house...

I got on my knees and shut out all communications. I began to fast and pray. I claimed on the promises that He stated in His word. I said, "Jesus my home is where my heart is. And if my heart is with You, and You abide in my House, no one on heaven and or earth can remove me where You have placed me."
Praise the name of the Lord saints. For He is worthy to be praised!!!! I received documents from the lender 3 days later stating that they where willing to work with me and the LOWERED my PAYMENT! AMEN! and AMEN! Do not sleep on the Lord friends for my God is amazing and He hears our prayers. He says in Jeremiah: Seek me while I may still be found. He also says in the Bible "Come and let us reason together." I am a living testimony of how good God is!!!!!

Appreciation for our Pastor
Pastor Samuel M. Dade, Jr

Dear Pastor Dade, Family & Friends,

Family and Friends, every month I send an unprecedented amount of emails to Pastor Dade, requesting that he send me his "As the Pastor Ponder's" thought for the month. And would you know it, he does, and does not get irritated by my emails and persistence, in fact he thanks me for them. He turns in his article and in every email response I can see him smiling.
What an awesome way to react, because if I was getting constant reminders from a slightly irritating editor in chief, I might have a few words for that person. Instead Pastor Dade is always so pleasant and almost makes me feel bad for pestering him weeks at a time.
Last year when I found out that Pastor Long was to be taken from Patmos Chapel, I felt personally attacked. How dare they take my pastor away? I had been growing spiritually and I felt the presence of the Lord in my life, mostly due to the practices that Pastor Long was instilling in me through the church services, prayers and fasting.
I recall telling my mother that it did not matter who was coming that I would never again love a pastor as the shepherd of God's flock ever again! Friends, Family, Pastor Dade, let me tell you that God speaks to mothers. My mother said "Maybe God is sending you someone that is for this season of your life." I told her good luck with that, I was 24 at the time and I believed that I had life all worked out. I knew that I was happy with Pastor Long, and I did not care what God had or had not planned, I had not room in my heart for 2 pastors.
Pastor Dade came that September and I remember him getting introduced, by the then President of the Southeastern Conference. A few persons stood and clapped welcoming him into the fold. I however sat in my seat unconvinced and hurt of this new persona. The choir sang, the serviced moved on and my heart remained unmoved.
Then Pastor Dade got up to preach. Here was this fair skinned man all smiles and taking my Pastor's pulpit. I crossed my arms and checked my watch, he had better not go too long.
He opened his mouth and began to preach. Church, let me tell you that it was over a year ago and I still remember his sermon. I have been in the church my whole life. Heard thousands upon thousands of sermons. And to be honest there are only so many stories in the Bible. I have heard them preached in every which way imaginable. Yet when he opened his mouth to speak about the 10 virgins, the Holy Spirit took hold of my clay heart and melted it. During the sermon I felt the Spirit tug and shape, mold my hardened heart. Before Pastor Dade had chance to say Amen, I, the one who once had her arms crossed and huffing at this person, was on my feet clapping and crying and praising the Lord.
The Lord was ready to bless me with a new pastor, a new phase in my life, but I was being too stubborn to see His hand moving on my behalf. Praise the Lord, He had His way with me and I immediately accepted Pastor Dade and his family into my heart.
After church I called my mother and told her what my pastor had preached in church.
In January of this year, Patmos under went a time of shaking. I recall on that Sabbath how my Pastor had been attacked verbally and yet even more, spiritually. I recall crying during the entire service. First because I could not believe that such a thing was happening in church, Patmos Chapel, and the second because they where hurting the man of God.
Next I remember crying because the Holy Spirit had taken what the devil had made into chaos and turned it into praise. Anointed Praise sang "Ride on King Jesus, No man can not hinder Thee". What a testimony to the powers of God. How He can take our mess and turn it into a message to spread out to the world!
This October I wanted to say thank-you to Pastor Dade for his ministry and his commitment to us. Please know that we love you and if we do not show it enough, we deeply appreciate you.

Love,

ATTENTION:
How to Perform a Breast Self-Exam

Beginning in their 20s, women should be told about the benefits and limitations of breast self-exam (BSE). Women should know how their breasts normally look and feel and report any new breast changes to a health professional as soon as they are found. Finding a breast change does not necessarily mean there is a cancer.

A woman can notice changes by being aware of how her breasts normally look and feel and by feeling her breasts for changes (breast awareness), or by choosing to use a step-by-step approach (see below) and using a specific schedule to examine her breasts.

If you choose to do BSE, the information below is a step-by-step approach for the exam. The best time for a woman to examine her breasts is when the breasts are not tender or swollen. Women who examine their breasts should have their technique reviewed during their periodic health exams by their health care professional.

Women with breast implants can do BSE, too. It may be helpful to have the surgeon help identify the edges of the implant so that you know what you are feeling. There is some thought that the implants push out the breast tissue and may actually make it easier to examine. Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding can also choose to examine their breasts regularly.

It is acceptable for women to choose not to do BSE or to do BSE once in a while. Women who choose not to do BSE should still be aware of the normal look and feel of their breasts and report any changes to their doctor right away.

How to examine your breasts

  • Lie down and place your right arm behind your head. The exam is done while lying down, not standing up. This is because when lying down the breast tissue spreads evenly over the chest wall and is as thin as possible, making it much easier to feel all the breast tissue.
  • Use the finger pads of the 3 middle fingers on your left hand to feel for lumps in the right breast. Use overlapping dime-sized circular motions of the finger pads to feel the breast tissue.
  • Use 3 different levels of pressure to feel all the breast tissue. Light pressure is needed to feel the tissue closest to the skin; medium pressure to feel a little deeper; and firm pressure to feel the tissue closest to the chest and ribs. It is normal to feel a firm ridge in the lower curve of each breast, but you should tell your doctor if you feel anything else out of the ordinary. If you're not sure how hard to press, talk with your doctor or nurse. Use each pressure level to feel the breast tissue before moving on to the next spot.
  • Move around the breast in an up and down pattern starting at an imaginary line drawn straight down your side from the underarm and moving across the breast to the middle of the chest bone (sternum or breastbone). Be sure to check the entire breast area going down until you feel only ribs and up to the neck or collar bone (clavicle).
  • There is some evidence to suggest that the up-and-down pattern (sometimes called the vertical pattern) is the most effective pattern for covering the entire breast, without missing any breast tissue.
  • Repeat the exam on your left breast, putting your left arm behind your head and using the finger pads of your right hand to do the exam.
  • While standing in front of a mirror with your hands pressing firmly down on your hips, look at your breasts for any changes of size, shape, contour, or dimpling, or redness or scaliness of the nipple or breast skin. (The pressing down on the hips position contracts the chest wall muscles and enhances any breast changes.)
  • Examine each underarm while sitting up or standing and with your arm only slightly raised so you can easily feel in this area. Raising your arm straight up tightens the tissue in this area and makes it harder to examine.

This procedure for doing breast self exam is different from previous recommendations. These changes represent an extensive review of the medical literature and input from an expert advisory group. There is evidence that this position (lying down), the area felt, pattern of coverage of the breast, and use of different amounts of pressure increase a woman's ability to find abnormal areas.

Cheers to a Healthy Life! -
Shauntelle Stevenson

The Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences that "the United States is the only wealthy, industrialized nation that does not have a universal health care system." We could debate or discuss everyday until Jesus returns as to why that is. We may never know. We may never have universal healthcare in this country. However, what we can do is take steps every day to lead healthy lives. Here are some steps to do that:

1) Eat well-balanced meals
You must eat well-balanced meals. Food guides were created to educate you in the amounts of food required each day to be healthy. It's important to follow its guidelines. Study nutrition labels. When you see foods high in saturated and trans fats, sugars, and sodium, avoid them whenever possible.
2) Eliminate addictions
This may not even cross your mind but your addiction to requiring the latest styles of clothing/shoes and your addiction to needing the newest computers or electronic gadgets can wear you down because you never feel satisfied with what you have!
3) Get adequate rest and sleep
Sleep provides your body with much needed energy to carry on daily functions. Your body's immune system is strengthened during sleep, helping to fight infections and disease more easily and readily. Sleep allows your body to relax which reduces the amount of stress you endure.
4) Regular exercise
Exercising daily improves all aspects of your health. Exercising forces your heart to pump blood throughout your body at a faster rate which helps keep your heart strong and healthy. Also, as blood pumps through your body it seems to have a renewing effect on your mind. You feel younger, stronger, and better equipped to deal with life's situations.
5) Meditation
Whether through relaxation or prayer, meditation is great for you. It allows you the opportunity to slow down and step back from reality to focus on your spiritual self. Faith's rewards are many. Your belief system gets you through the roughest of life's trials. You believe things are in God's control and that in the end, life works together for your good. It makes you feel great.
6) Reduce stress

Mentally reduce stress by having personal time each day doing something you enjoy, and be optimistic. Maintaining a positive attitude about life - believing that nothing will happen that you can't handle - does wonders for reducing stress levels.

7) Forgive others
It sounds easy sometimes but impossible at others. However, when you refuse to forgive someone, the only person you are hurting is yourself. You are holding on to a grudge that someone else may have forgotten a long time ago. When you forgive others, it releases you, mentally and spiritually, allowing you to move healthily forward with your life.
8) Socialize with family and with friends
Interacting with, and talking to, your families will bring a stronger bond between you whether you are talking around the dinner table, folding a load of laundry with your child, or quietly relaxing on the patio with your spouse. You will learn more about each other and, when details of troubling days have been shared, your family unit provides comfort, support, and guidance. Socialize with extended family members and friends when opportunities arise. Your immediate family should not be your only outlet when you need to release frustration or spread overwhelming joy. Try often to meet new people. You learn about others and the world around you through conversation. Fun becomes a part of your life away from home and it makes for a healthier you
.
God bless and keep you,
Shauntelle S.
