Epistles From the Editor

Dear Readers of PCN,

The Holiday Season has crouched up upon us. We have had our ups and downs, our wonderful Savior has seen us all the way. He is the reason for the season. He is the reason why we wake up every day and take a deep breath and move on. When we gather around our loved ones and enjoy the food that He has so willingly provided. We say thanks over our food, thanks for the day but do we really stop and thank the Lord for ALL that He has provided for us? He has given us all we need. Do recall His word in Matthew when He told us to seek first His kingdom and everything will be added unto us.
We need not worry about what tomorrow will bring for it is not promised. All we can count on is the Strength of the Lord and His strength is made perfect in our weakness.
So it's okay to go ahead and not be strong all the time. He has you and will never let you go!
My prayer for you is that during this Holiday Season you will take the time to show those around you how you feel about them and do not forget to tell the Master thank-you for His goodness to you!
Happy Holidays!

Sincerely Your Sister in Christ,

Truth about Giving Thanks

I’m Thankful for You
Thanksgiving is the appointed time
for focusing on the good in our lives.
In each of our days,
we can find small blessings,
but too often we overlook them,
choosing instead to spend our time
paying attention to problems.
We give our energy
to those who cause us trouble
instead of those who bring peace.
Starting now,
let’s be on the lookout
for the bits of pleasure in each hour,
and appreciate the people who
bring love and light to everyone
who is blessed to know them.
You are one of those people.
On Thanksgiving,
I’m thankful for you.
Happy Thanksgiving!

15 Tips for Safeguarding Your Child

by Kenneth Wooden, Creator of Child Lures Prevention

Kenneth Wooden, child safety expert and creator of Child Lures Prevention,
offers the following advice to keep
your family safe:

1. Avoid scare tactics when discussing personal safety.
Reassure
your child that most people are kind and safe.
Those who are not are the exception.

2. Instill within your child a sense of self-worth at every opportunity.

3. Teach your child about sex education but keep it basic,
i.e. "The areas of the body covered by a bathing suit are private."

4. Establish that sexual abuse is a crime.
This gives children the confidence to assert themselves
with those who try to abuse them. Teach them to say - "It's against the Law!"

5. Allow children to express affection on their own terms.
Do not instruct them to "Give Uncle Jimmy a kiss" or "Give Aunt Susan a hug."

6. Stress that there should be no secrets from you,
especially those involving an adult.

7. Develop strong communication skills with your children.
Explain the importance of reporting abuse to you or another trusted adult.

8. Make a commitment to spend quality time with your child.
Lonely and attention-starved youngsters are most vulnerable to abuse.

9. Make it a priority to get to know your child's friends and their families.

10.Encourage involvement in extracurricular activities.
Youngsters with many interests are less likely to become involved
with drugs or other negative influences.

11.Volunteer to chaperone activities like Boy Scouts and sporting events, especially those involving overnight trips.

12.Do not rely on the "buddy system."
While it may make children (and parents) feel safer,
its effectiveness is questionable. In many instances,
sisters, brothers and playmates have been victims
of terrible crimes when together.

13.Instruct children never to go with or get in a car with anyone,
unless you have given them direct permission.

14.Stress the importance of reporting rumors or threats of violence,
including bomb threats and weapon possession by schoolmates.
Reinforce that reporting can be done anonymously, but that school
officials must be told for the safety of everyone.

15.Above all, encourage children to recognize, trust and follow their instincts
-- and listen to your own instincts. If a situation or person makes you or your child uneasy, believe in your feelings and act on them.

Thanksgiving History

The Pilgrims who sailed to this country aboard the Mayflower were originally members of the English Separatist Church (a Puritan sect). They had earlier fled their home in England and sailed to Holland (The Netherlands) to escape religious persecution. There, they enjoyed more religious tolerance, but they eventually became disenchanted with the Dutch way of life, thinking it ungodly. Seeking a better life, the Separatists negotiated with a London stock company to finance a pilgrimage to America. Most of those making the trip aboard the Mayflower were non-Separatists, but were hired to protect the company's interests. Only about one-third of the original colonists were Separatists.

The Pilgrims set ground at Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620. Their first winter was devastating. At the beginning of the following fall, they had lost 46 of the original 102 who sailed on the Mayflower. But the harvest of 1621 was a bountiful one. And the remaining colonists decided to celebrate with a feast -- including 91 Indians who had helped the Pilgrims survive their first year. It is believed that the Pilgrims would not have made it through the year without the help of the natives. The feast was more of a traditional English harvest festival than a true "thanksgiving" observance. It lasted three days.

Governor William Bradford sent "four men fowling" after wild ducks and geese. It is not certain that wild turkey was part of their feast. However, it is certain that they had venison. The term "turkey" was used by the Pilgrims to mean any sort of wild fowl.

Another modern staple at almost every Thanksgiving table is pumpkin pie. But it is unlikely that the first feast included that treat. The supply of flour had been long diminished, so there was no bread or pastries of any kind. However, they did eat boiled pumpkin, and they produced a type of fried bread from their corn crop. There was also no milk, cider, potatoes, or butter. There was no domestic cattle for dairy products, and the newly-discovered potato was still considered by many Europeans to be poisonous. But the feast did include fish, berries, watercress, lobster, dried fruit

clams, venison, and plums.

This "thanksgiving" feast was not repeated the following year. Many years passed before the event was repeated. It wasn't until June of 1676 that another Day of thanksgiving was proclaimed. On June 20 of that year the governing council of Charlestown, Massachusetts, held a meeting to determine how best to express thanks for the good fortune that had seen their community securely established. By unanimous vote they instructed Edward Rawson, the clerk, to proclaim June 29 as a day of thanksgiving. It is notable that this thanksgiving celebration probably did not include the Indians, as the celebration was meant partly to be in recognition of the colonists' recent victory over the "heathen natives," (see the proclamation).

A hundred years later, in October of 1777 all 13 colonies joined in a thanksgiving celebration. It also commemorated the patriotic victory over the British at Saratoga. But it was a one-time affair.

George Washington proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1789, although some were opposed to it. There was discord among the colonies, many feeling the hardships of a few pilgrims did not warrant a national holiday. And later, President Thomas Jefferson opposed the idea of having a day of thanksgiving.

It was Sarah Josepha Hale, a magazine editor, whose efforts eventually led to what we recognize as Thanksgiving. Hale wrote many editorials championing her cause in her Boston Ladies' Magazine, and later, in Godey's Lady's Book. Finally, after a 40-year campaign of writing editorials and letters to governors and presidents, Hale's obsession became a reality when, in 1863, President Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November as a national day of Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving was proclaimed by every president after Lincoln. The date was changed a couple of times, most recently by Franklin Roosevelt, who set it up one week to the next-to-last Thursday in order to create a longer Christmas shopping

season. Public uproar against this decision caused the president to move Thanksgiving back to its original date two years later. And in 1941, Thanksgiving was finally sanctioned by Congress as a legal holiday, as the fourth Thursday in November.

Women in the Church for Real?

Paul was indeed inspired when he wrote the letters to the church at Corinth. Anytime you analyze scripture, you must look at it within the context it was written. In other words, what was going on at that time that made Paul mention what he said? What particular issue was he addressing to the church at Corinth? There is the temptation to take words out of context and misconstrue the meaning by taking a literal interpretation of this passage. In depth study with a prayerful spirit will allow the Holy Spirit to reveal scriptural meaning to seemingly difficult passages to understand. Remember, the bible is its own expositor. It will never contradict itself, neither will it change, because the Lord doesn't change! Hope that helps.

Steps to Having Christ's Virture... - Stacey Montages

Week of Prayer

STEPS TO HAVING CHRIST'S VIRTUE RESTORED IN YOUR LIFE

Based on passages that refer to Christ's Virtue (Omnipotent Power) that healed the woman with the issue of blood, and the multitude that came from Jerusalem, Judea, and the coasts of Tyre & Sidon (see Mark 5:25-30 & Luke 6:17-19, KJV)

*
       - See yourself in the True light - acknowledge and come to grips with who you really are - not just a nice person, but a sinner with moral weaknesses in need of a complete healing.

*       - Confess those weaknesses & sins to God (we may confess our faults to each other, but God already knows your true state) - confess them, with your lips & in your thoughts, to Him in prayer or in conversation. Ask for forgiveness from them. Ask for more of His Holy Spirit which will give you His Power to overcome your past sins and weaknesses for the rest of your life.

*       - Turn away from favorite sins, secret sins, and habits when tempted to do them - that's usually where we become morally weak, as we feel we can't fight the old, familiar feeling of a particular temptation. Some temptations are for things that we do, some are personality temptations. For example, some are tempted to drink, or smoke, or sexual encounters (real or in cyberspace) with anyone other than their spouse. While others are tempted to gossip, start negative rumors about someone, undermine others, anger, suicidal thoughts, hostility. Either way - FIGHT self to overcome your temptations! God can and will give you power to overcome the evil tempter - remember, he tempted CHRIST an hundred times greater than we are tempted - the Bible says, CHRIST, therefore knowing what we go through, is able to succor/keep us from yielding to temptation. It's not the temptation that's stealing our moral power & relationship with God - it's the yielding. So, let us REPENT of our sins - and try not to add on new ones!

*       - Accept God's forgiveness...and walk in the new overcoming power each and every day. One day at a time. Read the Word of God daily to create new habits in your brain-memory pathways. We are told it takes about 28-30 days for our brains and minds to break an old habit and form new ones. The Bible confirms this by giving us examples of individuals that went into prayer & fasting, coming away from the crowd & spending time with God for 40 days & nights (some needed 40 years!). The Bible says, a righteous man may fall seven times and rise again - what makes us righteous? Our MEDIATOR in the Most Holy Place in the Heavenly Sanctuary, covering our sins with HIS blood that was shed for us all at Calvary.

*       - Remember Lot's wife! Don't look back. Do not return to the old lifestyle, no matter when, in your Christian journey, the enemy brings it up again. Resist the devil, and he will flee.

JESUS commands - "Go and sin no more!" You can accomplish this as Virtue with Moral Power pours forth from HIM into your life.

Power that comes with Christ's Virtue in your life...

Matthew 10:1 And when He had called unto Him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease

Mark 6:7 And He called unto Him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits

Luke 9:1 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases

Luke 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you

***John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name

Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth

Acts 3:11, 12 And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together...greatly wondering. And when Peter saw it, he answered...Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this?...as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?

Acts 4:33, 34 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. Neither was there any among them that lacked...

Acts 6:8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people

Acts 8:18 ...through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given

Romans 1:16  For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth

Romans 15:13 ...the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

The best way to Mange your tasks.

Give Thanks with a Greatful Heart! - Shauntelle Stevenson

It is simply not enough to say "Thank you." Our actions and the way we live our lives should reflect that we are full of gratitude. It was once said by Cynthia Ozick that "We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude." How unfortunate would it be to live a life filled with blessings and for those around us to never be told and shown how grateful we are for those very blessings? In this Thanksgiving season, I would encourage us all, myself included, to be very mindful of our blessings and to not forget how fortunate we are. Although I am blessed every day that I am allowed to see, there are a few things for which I am incredibly thankful.
"I ended up having a blood transfusion mid-November 2007."
I am grateful for: Life, health, and strength
This time back in 2007, I was suffering from severe headaches and struggling with unrelenting fatigue. Because I had very similar symptoms in 2004, I knew that I needed to go to the ER. I ended up having a blood transfusion mid-November 2007. My body doesn't produce hardly enough iron or blood as it should. Since that time, I haven't had any major health concerns. I haven't gotten sick with cold or flu, like I normally do especially during Flu Season. I feel good and praise God for that.
"I will be forever grateful for my "Florida family."
I am grateful for: My loved ones and my paternal figures
When my mom and I moved to Florida a little over 13 years ago, I didn't realize how much my life would change. I didn't want to come here and there were times that I would miss my family back in Arkansas so much. Over the past 13 years, I have made bonds and friendships that I will treasure for the rest of my life. I have met and been influenced by numerous people that I would probably never had access to back in little Fort Smith, Arkansas. Some of my best friendships were formed here in Orlando. I have met and been taken in by such amazing people. I will be forever grateful for my "Florida family."
"All I really had was my mom."
I am grateful for: My mother
Coming from such a small town and large family, I felt a little out of place when I came to Florida. I was accustomed to everyone in town knowing me as "Bonita's granddaughter" or "Helen's girl." When I came to Florida, no one knew me that way. I didn't have my aunts and uncles here. I didn't have all my "big" cousins. I didn't have my grandparents. All I really had was my mom. My mom has been a constant factor in my life. She has always believed in my dreams and supported my decisions. She has always been one to encourage me to try harder and do more. She has shown me the importance of living a life directed by Christ. She has helped me to figure out who Shauntelle is. I know it may sound biased, and I'm sure everyone says so, but I have THE best mother. Ever.
"Being at Patmos has helped me break out...I have the best church family."
I am grateful for: My church and my wonderful church family
People often look at me and think that I am this little social butterfly. In truth, I am what is considered an outgoing introvert. I am very shy around people that I don't know and I very rarely go out of my way to meet people. Being at Patmos has helped me break out of that somewhat. I really believe that I have the best church family. We are a supportive, loving, compassionate people. There are several people that I look for on a weekly basis, because I need that encouraging word. When there is a basketball game, you would not believe the amount of support from people of all ages, all walks of life. We are truly a family and it shows. Whenever someone asks what church I attend, I am so proud to say "Patmos Chapel in Winter Park. You should come one Sabbath."
"I lost my job...unsure of how bills would be paid. I was stressing out like crazy."
Back in July of 2007, I lost my job. I was unsure of how bills would be paid. I was stressing out like crazy. Someone at Patmos was recruiting for Hewitt Associates, and I decided to see what Hewitt was all about. Thank God for Hewitt. Two years later, I'm still there and while I'm not doing what I love, I love that I have gainful employment. I have made wonderful connections at the company and have learned more about myself and my wants/needs in a career. Whenever I watch MSNBC or CNN or I read about the current unemployment rate, I feel blessed. I know that God has kept me and rewarded my faith in Him.
"Last, but certainly not least, I am most grateful for Jesus."
Last, but certainly not least, I am most grateful for Jesus. From day to day, I sometimes forget to stop and say "Thank God for Jesus." I sometimes forget where my life was headed a few years ago, and where God brought me from. I think about all the friends I've had over the years and some of them are drug addicts, alcoholics, sex addicts, and an array of other things. I've seen people suffer from eating disorders, life-threatening diseases, and severe mental illnesses. God has kept me safe and under His wing throughout many different stages in my life. Psalm 107:1, in the New Living Translation, says "Oh, thank God—he's so good! His love never runs out." Praise Him for His never-ending grace and mercy.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy said "As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." Let us remember daily this very quote. Take the time during this beautiful season to show your appreciation to those who you treasure.

God bless and keep you,
Shauntelle S.
