Epistles From the Editor

Dear Readers of PCN,

Happy New Year!!! I pray that the blessings and favor of the Lord continues to extend to you and yours in this new year, because His grace knows no bounds.
According to the American Heritage® Dictionary's 3rd edition Thesaurus, the synomn for the word epistle is letter. The definition is:
A written communication directed to another. Paul wrote over 60% of the New Testiment; epistles, if you may, to friends and church families encouraging, reproaching, teaching all in love. My prayer for you, is that the Patmos Chapel's Newsletter will be a stepping stone in your walk with God.
PCN or Patmos Chapel's Newsltter, is a project of love from so many contributors, who desire to create a medium where forums can be created, discussions can be made, the word of God explored, encouragement is given, entertainment is valued at a Christian perspective, expert advice is distrubuted, history is being made and recorded, and hope is kept alive.
Friends and Families of Patmos I invite you to embark with me as we take on this literal journey to discovering the wonderous love of Christ.
I hope your experience is in this issue is a blessed one
.

A look back to step forward

Black History

1958:
On January 12, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) is organized in Atlanta with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as its first President.

2009:
Janaury 20th Barack Obama becomes the first African American to be President of the United States of America.

Church History

In 1860 a mixed religious groups of people gathered together and came up with the name Seventh-day Adventist. The name literaly meaning that they A) they worshiped on the seventh day because:
"
Blessed is the man who does this, the man who holds it fast, who keeps the Sabbath without desecrating it, and keeps his hand from doing any evil."Let no foreigner who has bound himself to the LORD say,"The LORD will surely exclude me from his people."
And let not any eunuch complain,"I am only a dry tree." For this is what the LORD says:
"To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths, who choose what pleases me and hold fast to my covenant-to them I will give within my temple and its walls a memorial and a name better than sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that will not be cut off. And foreigners who bind themselves to the LORD
to serve him, to love the name of the LORD, and to worship him, all who keep the Sabbath without desecrating it and who hold fast to my covenant-these I will bring to my holy mountain and give them joy in my house of prayer.Their burnt offerings and sacrifices
will be accepted on my altar; for my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.
" Isiah 56:2-8
And adventist
B) because they were looking forward to the second coming, or advent of Christ:
"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am." John 14:1-3

...Being Reflective

A new year has donned upon us. A blessing that the Lord has extended to you and your loved ones to see this year. Take time to ponder what 2008 meant for you. What would you do differently? We all known that there is no real time machine that can take us back so we could redo or relive some events. What we can do is reflect. What if you had a specific time limit from God? Let's say you had 15 more years to live a healthy peaceful life. Gaurenteed by God your maker. What would you do in that time? Well that's exactly what happened to Hezekiah, the king of Judah. Hezekiah was sick and was told that he was going to die. So this is what 2 King 20:2-6 said he did:
Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD, "Remember, O LORD, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes." And Hezekiah wept bitterly. Before Isaiah had left the middle court, the word of the LORD came to him: "Go back and tell Hezekiah, the leader of my people, 'This is what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will heal you. On the third day from now you will go up to the temple of the LORD. I will add fifteen years to your life. And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city for my sake and for the sake of my servant David.' "
What an amazing promise to God. It was set that he was to die due to his illness. All his doctors and medical staffs said that his life was over. God had sent His own prophet and confirmed what everyone knew, Hezekiah was going to die. But becasue Hezekiah prayed unto His Lord, God sent Isaiah back to grant him life. What type of relationship did the King of Isreal have with the King of the Universe? 2 Kings 18: 5 - 7a explains that
"Hezekiah trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel. There was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, either before him or after him. He held fast to the LORD and did not cease to follow him; he kept the commands the LORD had given Moses. And the LORD was with him; he was successful in whatever he undertook..."
Can anyone say that in 2008 we trusted the Lord in everything? That we held fast to Him and did not stop following Him even when we had no money in the bank, or our bills where due, the fridge and pantries echoed the emptyness in our bellies? That we kept the commands of the Lord?
In 2009 use it to reflect our strong and weak points in the our relationship with God, and see that in this year if we too will be successful in wahtever we undertake. Happy New Year!

What does it mean to you?
So you roll out of bed by 10:30 in the morning. Place your musical venue of your choice to the gospel mix that was downloaded yesterday, and hit play. In the shower you go while singing to your favorite Sabbath morning tunes. Your mind is calculating which street you'll take so you can make it in time for the divine hour service. You need to make sure that you find a seat before the santuary is full. Last time you had to sit in the overflow room and you did not feel like you got your times' worth. The week before that you were offered a seat in the choir loft but you refused and stood up the entire service, complaing to yourself and anyone who could hear you. You always leave before the final benediction because you had gotten stuck in the parking lot once and a decon told you to wait!
You are now off in your car talking on the phone and making plans for tonight. Your Sabbath is done. You did your part, you attended church, that should be enough right?
As you click over on your phone your mother tells you about a Mission Spotlight story. Apparently in other places of the world, people are still dying for their beliefs.
With modern technology and the advancement of civilization, you can't possibly still believe that people are being dragged out of churches because they choose to worship on Saturday!
What if someone threatened your lifestyle, tried to burn down your home, threatened your family? Would you still go to church?

I saw her weeping for the one
who would replace me and all my sons.

When she gave him up, she then had none. And though I had a pair I took him as mine own son.

His voice was slient His dreams where rare, and still He spoke not to me but he who'd be my heir.

Thrice times He called and thrice times I was awoken. Not by His sound but by His token.

Disaster was promised to me and mine, for I had not delt properly with those who irreverently dined.

For 2 scores I reigned then died. Yet for the death of 2 sons I did not cry.

It was the sign of glory that had been removed Ichabod, that caused my death and opened my tomb.

Dear Family,

Here are Helpful Tips to Maintain Your Focus in 2009

The great Apostle Paul was facing death in a cold and lonely Roman prison cell.  Recorded in the book of 2 Timothy is in essence his final thoughts before his execution (4:6).  He wrote those thoughts to his “son” Timothy, passing to him the torch of leadership, focusing his attention on that which was important, and encouraging him in the faith.  You can almost imagine how young Timothy must have felt reading and rereading every word in the letter.  It was the last message from his beloved mentor and spiritual father, Paul.  Due to the dynamics, this is the most intimate and moving of all Paul’s letters, and his last.  Perhaps Paul saved his best for last.
Contained in chapter 2 Paul gives Timothy several tips of instruction written to keep him focused on leadership and discipleship within God’s church.  These tips are as applicable to us today as they were to Timothy in A.D. 66 or 67 as we attempt to remain balanced and focused in our spiritual lives.
Below are 10 helpful tips extracted from Paul’s last  letter to assist you as you strive to you’re your focus on Christ’s Kingdom in these unpredictable times in earth’s history.

1.  Be disciplined enough to endure hardship in both your personal and spiritual life which includes church.  (2: 3-7)

2.  Keep your eyes and mind focused on Christ. (2: 8-13)

3.  Avoid quarreling and warn against it, it has no value and only ruins those who listen. (2: 14)

4.  Do your best to present yourself to God as a workman who has no reason to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. (2: 15)

5.  Avoid godless chatter because those who engage in it will become more and more ungodly.  Their teaching will spread like gangrene. (2: 16, 17)

6.  Remember the Lord knows those who are His and those who confess Him must turn away from wickedness.  (2: 19)

7.  Commit your life to purity.  Pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the name of the Lord out of the depths of a pure heart.  (2: 20-22)

8.  Do not participate or engage in foolish and stupid arguments, because they only produce quarrels. (2: 23)

9.  The Lords servants must not quarrel; instead they must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. (2: 24)

10.  Those who oppose you must be gently instructed in the hope that God will grant them repentance, restoration and salvation. (2: 25, 26)

The Christian journey is never easy but if we focus on Christ and follow His counsel we will be successful, He guarantees it!  It is my prayer and desire that each of you who read this article will learn the importance of being focused.

Greetings in Christ,
Pastor Dade

Homosexuality: What is the Bible's Stance if two people love each other regaurdless of gender? - Questions & Answers with Thaddues Jackson

The Bible’s Stance on Homosexuality

Is there such a thing as a gay Christian? Is one born homosexual or is it learned behavior? Is it sinful to participate in homosexual activities? Is homosexuality a sin? I have seen and heard countless programs promoted in the media over the past 20 years that perpetuate the notion that homosexuals are born that way and had no choice in their sexual preference .“It’s just the way I am.” or “It just seems and feels right to be gay.” The Bible says, “There is a way that seems right unto a man, but in the end it leads to death.” Proverbs 16:25 (NIV). That text was not specifically aimed at homosexuals, but it is true nonetheless. Let’s examine this issue further. Genesis chapter 19 records the men of Sodom and Gomorrah being punished for their sexual perversion. Two angels paid a visit to Lot’s home in Sodom. Verse four tells that the men from every part of Sodom surrounded Lot’s house and told Lot to bring out his visitors so they could have sex with them. Jude 7 makes it clear that Sodom and Gomorrah’s punishment was due to their sexual perversion. Stay with me, we are just warming up. Check this out: Romans 1:26-27 is very specific when Paul says, “For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was met.”

Where do you stand on homosexuality? (Calm down! I am not asking if you are gay. I don’t want to know and please don’t tell me if you are J). I don’t know about you, but I must side with the bible which describes homosexuality as sin. Now that we have established that homosexuality is sin, we must come to grips with the fact that we live in a pro-homosexual world that has given media and some schools the right to promote the gay subculture. Some people have gone too far and have hurt the fight for morality by becoming violent towards homosexuals. This is wrong. Hate is not the answer. Love should rule regardless of the person. Hate the sin, but love the sinner. Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of America have instructed their local chapters to have at least one homosexual volunteer per chapter! Not so with The Boys Scouts of America, who has been under repeated attacks to permit homosexual men to be troop leaders. Kudos to the Boy Scouts of America for standing strong!!

Now let’s talk about sex. Sex is the creation of God. Sexuality is not sinful. It is a wonderful part of God’s plan. Sex is meant to be enjoyed in the context of marriage – not outside of it. Unfortunately, these days we must be very specific and say that sex is to be enjoyed within the context of marriage between a man and a woman. Genesis 2:24-25 says, “Therefore shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” Hebrews 13:4 says, “Marriage is honorable in all, and in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.” Are you still there? Then go with me here.

Let’s consider the Seventh-day Adventist Position on Homosexuality and same sex unions.

“Marriage was divinely established in Eden and affirmed by Jesus to be a lifelong union between a man and a woman in loving companionship. Though sin has perverted Gods’ ideals for marriage and family, the family is the closest; the most tender and sacred of any human relationship............God instituted marriage, a covenant-based union of two genders physically, emotionally, and spiritually, spoken of in scripture as one flesh.” The monogamous union in marriage of a man and a woman is ....the only morally appropriate locus of genital or related intimate sexual expression. Any lowering of this high view is to that extent of lowering of the heavenly ideal. Homosexuality is a manifestation of the disorder and brokenness in human inclinations and relations caused by sin coming into the world. While everyone is subject to fallen human nature, we can also believe that by God’s grace and through the encouragement of the community of faith, an individual may live in harmony with the principles of God’s Word. The Seventh-day Adventist Church recognizes that every human being is valuable in the sight of God, and we seek to minister to all men and woman in the spirit of Jesus.”

Is there such a thing as a gay Christian? No. Is one born homosexual? No, it is a choice, but I won’t ask, if you won’t tell!

Inside Anointed Praise
....Information on what our Youth is doing Today

..................................

.If you recall on the December 2008 Issue of PCN, there was an article by a member of Anointed Praise. His name was Fred Hidalgo. He wrote the amazing .article entitled Before Kings. Corey Williams is the director and mentor of Anointed Praise. The following reel is his take on this mission given by God.

.......................

...The Following is an Interview between the Corey Williams of Anointed Praise and PCN:

PCN: How did you get started in Anointed Praise?
CW: [I] was asked by the Minister of Music to relocate to Orlando and start the youth choir. Anointed Praise started in April 2002 and perform for the first time for Divine Worship that same month.  We can go more in depth at a later time
PCN: How long have you been their choir director?
CW: 7 years
PCN: What is the age range for AP?
CW:12 until they don't want to sing with the choir anymore LOL
PCN: How could one get involved?
CW:Just come
PCN: Were you in a Youth Choir when you were their age?
CW: Yes
PCN: What are the biggest challenges you face as being the chior director?
CW: Keeping the family together, sometimes getting them hype about a song that they may not like LOL...
PCN: I hear parents complain all the time how their young ones act out, and that they can not seem to get them under control. How difficult is it really for you to keep their focus?
CW: They are young people and young people want to do their own things.  I am not transparent to them and i always let them i understand where they are coming from. I don't have problems keeping them under control.  Maybe parents need to talk to their children more and get a understanding of where they are coming from.
PCN: You obviously have built a relationship with the Youth. How has that impacted your life?
CW: I have 2 plus 92 children that is how it has impacted my life. I love everyone of them and worry about them on a daily basis.  I keep them in prayer and glad to see them on the weekends when we rehearse.
PCN: This is a unique ministry that comes with it's challenges (as you previously acknowledged); what are some the blessings that you have experienced?
CW: Seeing grow into adulthood and going out in the world and not straying away. Don't get me wrong some have but eventually they all come back by the grace of GOD.
PCN: Do you feel that the church family really understands the amount of time and work that AP puts in?
CW: Some due but most don't
PCN: Do you feel supported by the church family. And how can the church family get involved with and by supporting AP?
CW: This question requires a one on one
PCN: I know you probably have many wonderful moments; but what is your favorite when working with the Youth.
CW: When I see them get emotional about the songs they sing.  When they minister to each other and to the world
PCN: What are your goals for them in 2009?
CW: We are currently finishing the goals for 2009 so I can't share them now until the Executive Committee has given final approval.:

Corey thank you for taking this time out to speak with PCN and about what God is doing through you for Him!

Not Always What I Wanted, but Always What I Needed - By Shauntelle Stevenson

I can recall the feelings or emotions that I had when I was told that we, my mom and I, were moving to Florida.  It was during the summer of 1996.  I was about to start sixth grade and had just had a birthday and turned eleven years old.  My mom and I were the only two people in our family who left Arkansas.  My mom's friend Sharon, and her daughter, Ashley, were moving with us, but none of my biological family members was coming to Florida.  I did not even know these people that well.   All of my cousins, my grandparents, my aunts and uncles, were staying behind.

I had just concluded the best school year of my life.   I read Project Sunlight, which is still my favorite book, learned how to balance a checkbook and so much about this thing called Adventism.  I was not ready to leave by any means.  I thought that I needed to be surrounded by my family in order to function properly.  I was very active in my church, probably because we had about twenty-five members and the church was made up of my family.  I was playing sports and a proud member of the Boys and Girls Club of America.  I thought I had it made.

When I first came to Florida, I hated it.  I wanted to go back home every time there was a break from school.  I did not really like my new church or school, because it was so different from anything I had ever seen; then something changed.  I started to really enjoy school and the friendship of my new classmates.  I had gone to private and public schools that were predominantly white from Kindergarten to fifth grade, but then in sixth grade, everyone looked like me.  "Black Adventism" was very new to me and I loved it.  I grew to love my church family; some of my best friendships were formed at Patmos.  As I grew older, I realized the different opportunities that were afforded me, solely because of a change of location.  I was able to attend academy and sing under the world-renowned Gale Murphy.  I was able to attend and graduate from one of the top schools in the country, Lake Brantley High School.  I voted in a swing state and helped Barack Obama become the 44th President of the United States of America!  I belong to a wonderful church and I am once again surrounded by family members who love and care for me, including my Aunt Sharon and my cousin Ashley.

Family, my point is this: yes, sometimes change is hard and it is usually inevitable. However, with prayer and God's guidance, change can be positive and beneficial for all those. It is not always easy to adjust our comfort level, do things with which we are not already familiar, go unusual places, or work with new people. Sometimes, being too comfortable in the life with which God has blessed us, blocks us from receiving new blessings and the growth He has in store for us. When we trust God to do as He has promised, we expose ourselves to His wonderful plan for us, which we may not see. "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope" (Jeremiah 29:11 NKJV).  He told us in Psalms 32:8 KJV, "I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye." It is not enough to just sit around and watch life pass us by. Sometimes we have to allow God to direct us into new places, new thinking, sometimes a new life altogether. Just remember that we cannot always get what we want, but in trusting God, we always get exactly what we need.

What’s So Critical About a Healthy Lifestyle ?

Ultimately, I want to live eternally – be saved.  As a human, I do have the choice of doing what I want to do while on earth: what feels good and is easy to accomplish without a lot of pain or effort!  Sometimes I really struggle with eating what tastes good, but isn’t good for me, or I work too many hours – take on too many things, and wonder since these are only little things, do they really matter that much to God – is it enough for me to be lost because it?  Have you ever wondered that ?

As I have studied, it has become clearer that when we come to Christ, our natures are still sinful, and will be until we put on immortality. What does change at conversion is our wills – as we give them to God every day.  We cannot do this effectively if our brains are not healthy.  The frontal lobes of our brains are where the centers of our wills are located, and these frontal lobes can be damaged by our lifestyle choices: improper diet, lack of exercise, too little sleep, so much so that we cannot choose wisely, and we block the pathways through which God communicates with us.

The pen of inspiration tells us,
“Anything that lessens physical strength enfeebles the mind and makes it less capable of discriminating between right and wrong. We become less capable of choosing the good and have less strength of will to do that which we know to be right.”
{Christ’s Object Lessons,
pg. 346}

So - I now know that if I learn what I can do to honor God in my body, I will be obeying His physical laws, and this will allow me to make wise choices and obey His moral laws: both laws are designed by God to benefit me – and you! Over the next few weeks, let’s look at what we can do health-wise, to strengthen our relationship with God, develop an unquenchable thirst for Christ, and get the most out of our earthly lives!

2nd Corinthians 9:15 : NKJV

Kelly sat in the church on Wednesday night listening to others talk she drifted back to her childhood. Growing up in an Adventist home it was normal to attend church on Wednesday nights. The service included; song service, opening prayer, testimonies, more prayer, a mini sermon, and closing prayer. The moment Kelly stepped into church she would count down the minutes when she would be able to return home to continue playing or watch television. At a young age, Kelly really didn’t understand why people came to church in the middle of the week to sit around and talk about their week and to study the Bible. The older Kelly got she became disinterested in Wednesday night prayer meetings. Kelly could probably count on one hand how many times she went to Wednesday night prayer meetings during her college career.

As Kelly listened to her friends talk about how much they enjoy prayer meetings she decided to give it another try.  Nowadays, Kelly looks forward to attending Wednesday night prayer meetings. One of the best parts to her is listening to the testimonies. Mid-week prayer meeting gives her that extra push to get through the week. Kelly enjoys hearing how God makes a way when things seem impossible. Sometimes we spend so much time complaining about what we want and what we don’t have. I can rest assure that if we made a list of all the things God has blessed us with; it would make the things we complain about look invisible.  Kelly found that prayer meeting was a time where individuals could come and give thanks, prayer, and encouragement, as well as, study the word of God with other’s intimately.

“Bless and be blessed”
